In health care, maintaining high standards of care is essential to protect the public. In Barbados, for nurses and midwives evidence of continuing professional education is a condition of re-registration, and for care roles a valid first-aid and CPR credential is expected on the job. Here is what the rules expect for your role — and how recognized, up-to-date, documented training meets it.

Health professionals: continuing education and up-to-date skills

Nurses and midwives in Barbados are regulated by the Barbados Nursing Council under the Nurses' Act 2008. The Act ties renewal of registration to evidence of ongoing professional education, so keeping clinical and emergency skills current is not merely encouraged — it is part of remaining licensed to practise.

The professional duty to maintain competence and to be able to act in an emergency underpins this requirement. Documented, recognized training is the practical way for a nurse to show, at renewal, that the activities undertaken are relevant to practice and meet the Council's expectations.

Registration renewal requires evidence of continuing professional education activities under the Nurses' Act 2008; the exact number of hours per cycle is not publicly specified. A CPR/BLS course taken through an accredited or recognized provider can count toward that evidence, provided the activity is relevant to your practice.

The requirement is met by any recognized continuing-education activity on an eligible topic. CPR/AED, ACLS (advanced cardiovascular life support) and PALS are among the eligible activities; other topics also qualify (for example safe prescribing, suicide prevention or violence prevention). A single course therefore both meets the obligation and counts toward your hours — provided you keep the proof.

Not all activities are equal. For continuing education to be recognized by a professional order, it must meet specific criteria:

  • the instructor’s competence;
  • the relevance and quality of the content;
  • the training framework;
  • the quality of the material provided;

For support staff, first aid and Basic Life Support are built into the qualifying pathway. The Barbados Community College Certificate in Nursing Auxiliary Studies, delivered on the Nursing Council of Barbados syllabus, embeds First Aid and Basic Life Support in its curriculum. For private elder-care and home-care roles, a valid recognized standalone first-aid and CPR certificate is required and accepted alongside that occupational training — obtained and then renewed, kept current and verifiable.
